The Secret

to Making Your Love Last

By

Tramaine Cavil

In a perfect world, people would stay married forever, and there wouldn’t have to be things such as divorce, separation, alimony, child custody, and other such issues to worry about. The words "’til death do us part" would have a lot more meaning than they seem to have today, and a commitment would actually be a commitment.

Unfortunately, the world is less perfect than we would wish, and marriage vows and relationship commitments are often just as fragile as the paper they are printed on. Is this truly where we are in the relationship stakes? Is love indeed a passing fancy that is inevitably bound to cool down, falter and fail? Not quite.

As it turns out, there are quite a few people out there for whom vows of commitment and love are still worth holding on to and preserving. And central to maintaining that bond is working to keep the love alive.

It may sound like the title to a song (and it probably is), but keeping the love alive is precisely the secret to long, fruitful and mutually beneficial relationships. Think about love as the foundation upon which the entire relationship is based, and you are beginning to get the picture. Without love at the core, all your best efforts to hold on to the relationship are bound to fail at some point or another. Build your relationship on love however, and everything else will come naturally.

Once you have established the important part, all that remains is to reinforce it in your own special way. A good way to keep the embers of love growing is to show your partner that you care through small, subtle acts. It could be as simple as writing a short love note before you leave for work or even sending a simple text saying "I love you!", but the point is to pour on the affection in numerous welcome ways throughout the course of an "ordinary" day.

Don’t worry about spending too much money on your affectionate displays either. All that is necessary is for you to show your partner that even when things are at their most stressed and harried, that he or she is still present in your mind and in your heart. It is one thing to take your mate out to a fancy dinner or to buy expensive jewelry, but even these small touches will go a long way in reinforcing the love that you feel toward each other.

You may also want to keep things spontaneous and fun. Deviate from your normal routine by arranging to have the kids sleep over at your parents for the weekend for example, or by surprising your partner with tickets to his or her favorite show. Not only will this allow you to spend quality time together; this will also show just how much effort you are putting into maintaining a healthy relationship.

So to put it simply, the secret to making love last is to never stop loving... externally. You can love someone with all your heart but if you’re not showing it by expressing it continuously, it’s never felt.  Say it, make it, and express it and your love will last.
