Why You Should Get a Divorce

By

Tramaine Cavil

There are all sorts of reasons that people stay together, even when the prospect of divorce may be the temptation of a lifetime, and this is especially true when your children's lives will be influenced by the split. But in some cases, the reasons for divorce may actually outweigh the reasons to stay together even for the sake of your children. There are many situations in which separated parents will actually be better for the kids. Here are just a few.

Your Spouse Engages in "Risk Behaviors"
No matter how much you love a person, nothing should come before you and the safety of your children. If your spouse has substance abuse problems, or does something else that consistently puts your family in danger (and they refuse to change the behavior), you should start looking to find a better living environment for you and your children.  Excessive alcohol and drugs are generally surrounded by illegal activity, scarred upbringings, and violence. All things children shouldn’t be around.

Your Spouse is Abusive
Abuse comes in countless forms and it can be hard to believe when someone we  love is bringing us physical and mental pain. If your spouse is physically or emotionally abusing you or your children it’s time to seek help.  If it happens once, there’s a great chance it will happen again and three or more times is a habit. Your first priority is finding a safe home for you and your children.  Children easily repeat the environments in which they were brought up.  You don’t want to put your children in a situation where your son is abusing his future wife and your daughter allows her husband to abuse her because that’s the way they were brought up.

Infidelity

Once a cheat, always a cheat, right?  Well not always but each of us have our different levels of tolerance for it.  If it happens, the core of your relationship, “trust”, has been lost and there’s no longer a foundation for your marriage to stand on.  Whether the first time is enough for you or whether the second or third time is the straw that breaks the camels back, infidelity is not a welcome guest in anyone’s marriage.

Just like marriage, divorce shouldn’t be taken lightly.  Marriage is a commitment that you can’t give up on just because there’s a rainy day or two in your life.  Even when times are good, sometimes it’s an everyday struggle to maintain happiness, love, and a connection. Exhaust all the options, exhaust all the resources, and exhaust all your effort before giving up. The above examples are all actions and behaviors that can be changed.  Work together to change them to better your marriage and to better your spouse.  If unsuccessful, you will then be able to walk away without any regrets.
