Marriage Counseling:

What You’ll Learn

By

Tramaine Cavil

Marriage has many complexities and often times the solutions to the countless riddles that are presented during our unions may seem unattainable.  Instead of seeking help to determine answers to our problems, we sometimes continue down the wrong path making the problem into a habit and changing our once blissful marriages into a living hell.  It’s so easy for us to ask for assistance when we’re struggling with something at work, or when the car is making noises and needs to be taken to the shop, but when it comes to our relationships, all hands off!  No matter how loud our arguments get or how much friction occurs daily between us, some of us have determined that it’s sink or swim and we don’t need any outsiders meddling in our business.  Even worse, the times we do reach out to someone for advice, it’s to one of our single friends that have no clue of how to resolve the inner workings of a marriage.

What should be realized is that marriage counseling is not a last ditch effort or an invasive device to intrude on your relationship. Instead, it’s a tune up or an education if you will, to help you navigate out of the troubled patch you’ve gotten yourself into.  Counseling is there to help not hurt your relationship, but often times the fear of being vulnerable or the fear of the truth prevents those needing counseling from experiencing it.

You’re not an expert on relationships and the problems you’re having within your own displays that fact very clearly.  Allowing someone that has the education, skills, knowledge, and the experience to help you through your problems will definitely be a humbling experience, but the end result which should be your main focus, is hopefully a happier marriage.  Here are some benefits to seeing a marriage counselor.

You’ll Learn How to Communicate in a Productive Manner

More than likely, one of the major reasons why you’re marriage is struggling is because you forgot how to communicate properly.  When marriages go bad, both parties are usually on the defensive and aren’t really listening to what’s being said especially if it only benefits the other party.  You will learn to communicate in a calmer manner and learn to listen and process what the other person is saying.

You’ll Learn to Understand Your Spouse’s Feelings

In school, we learned that for every effect there is a cause and this rule applies to marriages as well.  There’s many reasons why your spouse feels the way he or she does and through counseling you’ll uncover those causes and many other reasons that neither of you were aware of.  You kill the weed at the root and the cause of the problem is the root you need to tend to.

You’ll Learn to Resolve Your Conflicts in a Healthy Manner

It’s obvious that the way that you’ve been going about handling your issues has been all wrong. You can achieve the intended results you expected from your yelling and throwing of things around the house in a more calm and healthy way.  Results are generated from calm dialog when both parties have the intention to truly understand and respect each other ‘s view point, and are willing to compromise for the sake of a mutual decision.

You’ll Gain a Better Understanding of Your Spouse and of Yourself

The key to resolving most disagreements is obtaining understanding.  It’s extremely difficult to get on the same page with someone when you have no idea where they’re coming from.  You’ll be given the tools to allow you to understand your spouse better and at the same time, you’ll be provided the skills to understand yourself better.

Although no marriage counselor can provide you a guaranteed fix, you are better off attempting to resolve your relationship issues with a skilled mediator if your own attempts have been unsuccessful.  It’s never too early nor too late to attempt to save your marriage from potential disintegration.  The simple gesture of showing that you’re willing to go through the process with your spouse shows them that you’re wanting to make it work.  This marriage was important enough for you to create, so it should be just as important, if not more, for you to save.
