Are You Ready to Move On?

By

Tramaine Cavil

Freedom! Some of us yell it at the top of our lungs like a battered Rocky Balboa yelling for Adrian. “FREEEEEDOM!!” Oh the glorious feeling of getting out of an unhealthy relationship. No longer do you have to hear someone nag or complain but most importantly, you no longer have someone that you have to answer to. Thank God!

Ending a relationship presents a set of difficulties but compared to actually moving on, sometimes breaking up is the easy part. Simply uttering the words, “Things aren’t working out” and retrieving all of your belongings from each other’s house doesn’t enable you to move on without a hitch. Just like there was a process involved in getting together, there is a process involved in breaking up and moving on with your life. If you don’t follow the process, then your next relationship will more than likely be doomed because you didn’t prepare yourself for it.

Before you move on to your next relationship, ask yourself three questions.

Question 1:

Have I Applied The Lessons That I’ve Learned From My Past Relationship?
Regardless of whose decision it was to end the relationship and no matter if the other person simply just screwed things up, both individuals should take away knowledge on how they can become a better partner. Each relationship presents different experiences for each person and from the experiences, there should be lessons learned. In most cases, both people play a role in the success of a relationship and the failure of a it as well. What were some things that you did or didn’t do that made your partner unhappy? Have you learned that fighting in certain situations just isn’t worth it? Do you now understand that trust is everything and once you lose it, you can’t get it back? Take whatever lessons you learned from this past relationship and apply them to your life. If you do, you’ll be saving yourself from making the same mistakes twice!

Question 2:

Have I Found “Myself” Again?
You don’t quite realize it as it’s happening but the longer that you’re with someone, the more you change. Sometimes it’s for the better but often times it’s for the worse. Not only are you changing to help mesh two separate lives into one but in a difficult relationship, you’re compromising yourself and your core values a lot more than you should to help keep the peace. The moment that things click for you and you realize that you’re not quite the person that you used to be, is when you become single again and you try to move forward. You realize that your current self is a little unfamiliar with your prior self. It’s like seeing an old friend that you haven’t seen in forever. You know who they are but since it’s been so long, you feel like you really don’t know them anymore. You have to take the time to get reacquainted with the person you were previously. It can be a long road back but you have to get back to who you were. If you don’t find the person you were, you may be taking the worst of you into your next relationship.

Question 3:

Am I Completely Over Him/Her?
When you’re fresh off a break up, everyone tries to convince themselves that they are ready to move on. But are you really? Are you still dreaming about your ex? Do they still creep into your mind 5 to 10 times a day? When you cross paths, does your heart hurt? When he or she calls or sends you a text message, does your heart drop? If you can say yes to any of these questions, more than likely you are not ready to move on. If the opportunity presented itself you would probably kiss, sleep with, or get back together with your ex. This is not moving on and if you were in the middle of seeing someone new, it’s definitely not fair to them. To be true to yourself and the next person you date, make sure that the only direction you’re going is forward. Once you’ve determined that there’s no going back, you’re ready to move on.
